These beautiful textiles were woven in Ivory Coast, West Africa by the Baule tribe to be used as clothing. Baule women wear them as a wraparound "skirt". 

Baule textiles are unique in Africa for the ikat techniques the Baule weavers often use. The great variety of patterns and colors make these among the most interesting fabrics made and used in Africa. This one is characteristic of the indigo style the Baule highly prize and is exceptional in size.
