Vintage Baule Textile "Wrapper" | 54" x 35"

$159.99

Originally woven in Ivory Coast, West Africa by the Baule tribe to be used as clothing. The native people who used them refer to these textiles as "wrappers". Often these textiles are made in matching pairs since a woman wears one around her waist and uses the other to tie her baby on her back. Vintage pairs are hard to find as they wear differently; for both to survive intact is possible but not common.

Since these are vintage, we are privileged to obtain these fabrics in such good condition. One unique aspect of the Baule textiles are their diversity in pattern and color choice. There are so many combinations that it makes each one a unique piece of art and can really stand out. They range from complex patterns and colors to simple which is great for a wide range of environments.

Each textile is composed of many small bands (roughly 6" wide) that are sewn together side by side. In many of the Baule textiles, each band can be determined by the solid line that travels horizontally through the textile. The ends of the textile have soft tassels, often of multiple colors, which are an amazing accent to the textile and gives it a great look.

This textile measures 54" x 35"
