This small brass mask gold weight, more intricately designed than most, was hand cast using the traditional lost wax casting method with all traditional materials and techniques. Gold weights were in common use when gold was the most desirable currency all over West Africa, more than 100 years ago. This practice ended with the advent of Europeans and the introduction of a modern monetary system.
