African Black Recycled Metal Fish Wall Ornament - Mali
$196.00
Statues of this genre are used ritually by the Bamana people of Mali. Typically it would be the focus of what they call a "sacrifice" in which offerings of various substances - like the blood of a chicken that was killed for this purpose - would be made in honor of a spirit which this figure represents. This figure, of a male with exaggerated genitalia, is a very unusual version of an otherwise relatively common Bamana statue. In my 40 years of collecting in Africa this is the only statue I have ever seen manifesting this characteristic in this fashion. It is very rare.
This figure measures:
28 3/4 x 7 x 5 3/4" (73 x 18 x 15 cm)
