Large African Recycled Wire Toy Convertible Car - Niger
Traditionally, all children in Africa make their own toys out of found materials: discarded cans, wire, old sandals, tires, etc. Following this long-standing tradition modern artists are creating art in all kinds of forms. This car was made by such an artist but it could have been a toy a child might have made for him or herself. This car was probably made to represent the old French Citroen 2CV (deux chevaux) but also looks very much like the German/American VW bug. Both the hood and the trunk of this beautiful sculptural rendition of a toy car open.
Although this could have been a toy in Africa we consider it only to be a decorative object. It is NOT appropriate as a toy for a child unless it's the African child for whom it was made.
