Baule statues and figures are the most known and collected tribal art in Africa. This is due to the fineness and detail of the carvings. Much time and emphasis is put on the head of the piece. This is because this statue represents the spirit of an ancestor. Since the face it the most differing factor with people, it is important for them to have a good representation of whom it was. This figure was kept in a personal shrine where family members could give offers, or seek advice for the future. As the wood dried, after being carved, a crack opened up which has been filled in a fairly visible way. Thereby restored it remains an excellent, very old, authentic object.
