Bamana Animal Design Contemporary Mudcloth - Mali
$298.00
These beautiful textiles were woven in Ivory Coast, West Africa by the Baule tribe to be used as clothing. Baule women wear them as a wraparound "skirt". Originally woven in pairs - one for a woman's waist, the other to tie her baby to her back, vintage pairs are hard to find as they wear differently; for both to survive intact is possible but not common.
Baule textiles are unique in Africa for the ikat techniques the Baule weavers often use. The great variety of patterns and colors make these among the most interesting fabrics made and used in Africa.
This textile measures 62 x 46" (157.5 x 117 cm)
