Kuba Cloth Long Raffia Textile | 134 x 25"
This type of Kuba cloth, known as "bushoong" is a durable fabric made of raffia: 3 hand-woven lengthwise strip as the background. The outside strips are in brown as the background, with geometric natural straw-color appliqués and random geometric light brown and natural straw-color appliqués. The center strip is in black raffia cloth, with one raffia geometric appliqué in natural straw color and embroidered designs with cowrie shell accents.
Handmade in the heart of The Democratic Republic of the Congo, the background cloth was woven by a male of the Bakuba tribe. Women typically accent the textile using sewing on the appliqués by hand. Kuba cloths are woven as a symbol for a person, couple, or family; thus having extravagant designs, patterns and shapes as a symbol of artistic creativity and workmanship.
This textile measures 134 x 25" (340 x 63 cm)
