Abacá Décor Pillow Throw with Embroidered Coconut Beads - Plant Design
This beautiful pillow case was woven from abacá fibers; sometimes also known as Manila hemp, Cebu hemp, or Davao hemp. All of which are different islands of the Philippines. The plant itself looks very much like a banana plant, although the fruit it bears is quite different. The abacá fiber is the strongest natural fiber in the world, which is why during the Spanish Colonial Period abacá's main purpose was to be manufactured as rope for very large sailing ships. At the time, Spain was in rule of the Philippines which allowed Spain to provide Europe with much of their ropes, were much more durable than domestic rope.
As of today, over 85% of all abacá comes directly from the Philippines, which makes this pillow not only unique in design, but also in material. Since abacá fibers are very strong they provide the pillow with a smooth but sturdy texture and feel, which is why it appears to show reflection in the picture. This pillow case is a 18" square that has an opening on the back that is secured by coconut buttons, polished and shined for enhanced appeal. The bead work, composed of beads made from local coconuts, are embroidered throughout the entire front side of the pillow. A time consuming process in both making the beads, and sewing them on.
To maximize the and shape and overall appearance of the pillow, we recommend using an insert that is 2" larger than the pillow case, which would be a 20" pillow insert. This pillow does not include an insert with purchase.
