African Recycled Metal Can Toy Helicopter - Burkina Faso
Traditionally, all children in Africa make their own toys out of found materials: discarded cans, wire, old sandals, tires, etc. Following this long-standing tradition modern artists are creating art in all kinds of forms. This helicopter was made by such an artist but it could have been a toy a child might have made for him or herself. Each toy of this style is unique so it may vary slightly from the one pictured here.
This toy is unique in that it has been designed for the rotors to turn when the wheels are turned, i.e., when it is pushed on a flat surface.
Although this could have been a toy in Africa we consider it only to be a decorative object. It is NOT appropriate as a toy for a child unless it's the African child who made it.
