This extraordinary pair of vintage Baule ceremonial shoes from Ivory Coast are authentic hand-carved objects unique to the Baule. Clearly they would have been covered with gold leaf, pressed into the very finely carved design to show through the gold. The gold would have been either worn off with use over many years or removed before they were sold to a dealer.
