This reproduction mask made by a member of the Guro tribe of Ivory Coast follows a well established tradition of masks that are worn in ceremonial dances. This face is typically Guro. Whatever figures featured on the top of any such mask are meant to honor whatever those figures represent. This mask honors hornbills which may have played a significant role in the life of the village where this mask could have been used (although this one would not have been since it's not authentic). Hornbills are birds commonly found all over West African rural areas.
