This mask is characteristic of the Guro people's style of mask, where the facial features all follow the same tradition and the elements on top, which always vary a great deal, are symbolic of the village's or the tribe's experience. In this case, although we are unaware of the exact reference, it's likely that someone in the tribal or village history had an encounter with a snake which ended up helping one of the villagers or even the entire village.
