Original Vintage Dinka Headrest of South Sudan
The Dinka are a group of people whom reside in South Sudan. This headrest hand-carved from a single piece of wood. In many African cultures, headrests such as these are used to support the head during sleep. However, in some cases, the headrest is used to preserve a sophisticated hair style. This headrest is equipped with a leather strap, allowing the stool to be carried more easily and perhaps for long distances. In traditional African culture beds were not like western beds. In fact, many people would sleep on the ground, or nap on the ground for a short period of time during travel. The headrest has a slight dip in the top which forms two bird heads at each end. The double bird motif was used in East Africa from Pre-Dynastic times in Ancient Egypt.
This headrest measures: 20" x 7.5" x 10"
