Vintage Silver Khalkhal Anklet - Mauritania

$899.00

Antique Mauritanian Coin Silver Khalkhal Anklet – Sahara, West Africa – 167 grams
This impressive silver khalkhal (anklet) is a beautiful example of traditional Saharan jewelry, most likely from Mauritania or the western Sahara region of West Africa. Heavy silver ornaments such as this were treasured possessions, worn by women both as personal adornment and as a visible expression of wealth, family status, and cultural identity.
The anklet was hand cast by a traditional metalsmith and decorated with finely chased geometric designs. The broad central panel features raised silver granulation and engraved triangular and linear motifs, while the heavy rounded terminals give the piece its powerful sculptural presence. The surface shows deep natural oxidation and wear acquired through many years of use.
Among the Moorish (Bidhan) communities of Mauritania and neighboring Saharan regions, silver jewelry represented more than beauty—it served as a portable store of wealth and was often associated with important life events such as marriage. Jewelry-making was traditionally carried out by specialized artisan families whose skills were passed down through generations.
This piece was acquired in West Africa, most likely Mali, where Mauritanian and Saharan jewelry circulated widely through historic trade routes linking the Sahara and Sahel.
A striking collector’s object, this khalkhal displays the elegance, strength, and refinement of Saharan metalworking traditions.
