This cloth is woven and dyed in Nigeria by the Tiv people, made of cotton resist-dyed with indigo. Its black ground carries two opposed white diamond, or hourglass, shapes set against the deep dye. Cloths of this type are worn by Tiv women as wrapped head ties, often made to match a skirt of the same cloth, and outside Africa they also serve well as scarves, shawls, or table runners.

This piece is in fair condition. Rust-brown tide-line staining spreads across the white diamond field, and there is an additional brown ring stain near the boundary between the black and white areas.
