Tiv Nigerian Cotton Cloth with Moon-Like Circles | 68 x 41"
This cloth is woven and dyed by the Tiv people of Nigeria, made of cotton finished with indigo dye to produce the strong black-and-white contrast seen here. Textiles of this narrow, banded configuration are traditionally used by Tiv women as head ties, wrapped around the hair as an elegant accessory, often made to match a wraparound skirt. Outside of Tiv communities, cloths of this kind are also put to use as scarves, shawls, or table runners. The design here shows three large circles, moon-like in form, set in white against the black ground.
The cloth is in good overall condition. Near the lower right of the center circle there is a tiny dark speck, possibly a small stain or a loose thread, though it does not disrupt the pattern otherwise. As with indigo-dyed cotton generally, hand wash gently or dry clean to avoid running.
This cloth measures 68 x 41" (173 x 104 cm)
