This cloth is woven and dyed by the Tiv people of Nigeria from cotton and indigo dye.

The cream and black surface carries a resist-dyed design of a large central circle set within four corner triangles, a pattern drawn from Tiv textile tradition. Cloths of this type are worn by Tiv women as wraps or head ties, and are also used outside Africa as scarves, shawls, or table runners. This example is in good condition. As with all indigo-dyed cloth, some color transfer is possible when wet, so dry cleaning or careful gentle hand washing is recommended rather than machine washing.
