Pipe smoking of tobacco is a long-standing traditional activity in African villages across the Continent. Although many such pipes are common and ordinary in design the genre has given rise to a very well-developed form of African artistic expression. This pipe bowl is among the most exceptional with a detailed bearded man wooden bowl, lined with aluminum with a monkey behind it. We did not find the original mouthpiece with the bowl when we collected this unique object. This is old and worn but remains in excellent condition.
