This very old, very used knife handle was removed from a similarly used Tuareg tribal ceremonial knife, in Mali. The blade had probably disintegrated over time. The owner of the knife must have valued it enough to have conserved the handle which was so beautifully made.

The intricately handcast brass handle is adorned with traditional copper damascene elements. This is an exceptional object of African traditional artistic expression.
