This beautiful Tagbana figure is highly patinated, evidence of its long use and age. Tagbana figures are relatively rare and exceptional. Like the better known Baule statues and figures these are among the most highly prized tribal art in Africa. This is due to the fineness and detail of the carvings. Much time and emphasis is put on the head of the piece. This is because this statue represents the spirit of an ancestor. Since the face it the most differing factor with people, it is important for them to have a good representation of whom it was. This figure was kept in a personal shrine where family members could give offers, or seek advice for the future.
