Vintage Ethnic Lu Skirt from Northern Vietnam | 37" x 22"
The Lu people are located in Lai Chau Province in Northern Vietnam. This Ethnic minority is known for their colorful intricately embroidered clothing. The Lu people cultivate cotton and silk, then combine natural dyes to produce their outfits. Many of their colorful patterns are inspired by birds, trees, and flowers. Their skirts are composed of 3 separate sections, the most impressive part being the middle section which consists of many different diamond patterns and colors.
The most complicated part of the outfit is the diamond weaving pattern, which can take years of practice to master. It is considered by Lu women that in order to be deemed suitable for marriage they must weave their own clothing. This is a complete skirt that can still be worn or re-purposed.
