The Luba aka Baluba (the prefix "Ba" means "people", thus Baluba means "Luba people") use headrests to protect the elaborate hairstyles traditionally manifested and appreciated by that tribe. The woman represented in this sculpture is meant to celebrate the importance of women in Luba society which is matrilineal.
