The Luba aka Baluba (the prefix "Ba" means "people", thus Baluba means "Luba people") use headrests to protect the elaborate hairstyles traditionally manifested and appreciated by that tribe. The two women represented in this sculpture are meant to celebrate the continuity of power in Luba society which is matrilineal.
