Antique Chinese or Sino-Vietnamese Silver Dragon Matchbox Sleeve circa 1900-1925

$249.00

This finely hand-crafted silver sleeve is decorated in relief with a dynamic five-clawed dragon emerging from swirling clouds above cresting waves, an enduring symbol of imperial authority, strength, prosperity, and good fortune in Chinese art. A finely engraved geometric border frames the central panel, while the sides are embellished with floral scrollwork and delicate punched decoration.

Originally made to protect and embellish a small matchbox, the sleeve is open at both ends to allow the inner box to slide freely, while an elongated opening on one side provides access to the striking surface. Such silver matchbox sleeves were practical luxury accessories carried by prosperous merchants, scholars, and officials during the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican period.

Purchased from an antique dealer in Hanoi, this example reflects the close artistic traditions shared by Chinese and northern Vietnamese silversmiths during the early twentieth century. The absence of maker’s marks is not unusual for workshop-produced pieces of this type.

Hand-fabricated from high-grade silver, the sleeve displays an attractive natural patina acquired over many decades of careful use.
