Vintage Vietnamese Basket - Tall
This is a vintage, handwoven bamboo basket from Vietnam. Purchased many years ago on our travels there all the way in the north of Vietnam, Sapa. This basket was mainly used for rice or tea, completed with straps to allow a more efficient means of carrying. These baskets are quite rare now, though contemporary versions are still being made today. This basket is old, and is evident of that by the patina that resides on the edges of the basket. Signs of wear on the bottom show that this basket was used for a long time. This basket contains a top that around the outside walls and can be removed as desired. The top is one of the most extraordinary tops I have ever seen, containing part of a bamboo stem that was split in shoots that run down the side of the top. Thus the rest of the top was woven around those shoots. Certainly amazing structural engineering that you don't see anymore today.
This basket measure 33″ x 14.5″
