Contemporary XL African Brass Mask Pendant - Ghana
$59.99
This authentic, vintage, one of a kind beaded choker necklace was made by a Bella artisan and worn by a woman of that same Bella tribe, in Niger. The khomissar genre of pendant, a traditional Tuareg design (the Tuareg and Bella are closely associated) would normally have 5 diamond shape shell pieces representing the five fingers of a hand. This one is unique in that the central "finger" shell is replaced by a green disk but the significance is the same: the hand protects the wearer from what they call "the evil eye", and is representative of their Muslim faith. It doubles as a fertility symbol.
The necklaces' circumference is 15 1/2" (39 cm). The khomissar pendant measures 1 3/4 x 1" (4.4 x 2.5 cm)
