This garment, a pleated dress, is a contemporary garment an African tailor made out of traditional 100% cotton cloth. This cloth was woven with stripes, using the same homespun cotton thread, dyed black. Although the garment is not a completely traditional one, the fabric from which it is made is fully traditional and the pleating technique is very traditional in tunics very commonly worn by men of the Mossi tribe. The cloth is hand-woven in narrow bands by male weavers using the traditional double heddle dragstone loom. The cotton is locally grown then hand carded and hand spun into thread by women of the tribe. Once the bands are woven they are sewn together, side by side,  by hand by women of the Mossi tribe, in Burkina Faso.

The fabric obtained by this traditional technique is the foundation of a large percentage of all the cotton cloth made all over Africa, especially West Africa. This is the cloth preferred for traditional African clothing. This cloth, this garment, is not dyed; this is the raw cotton as it was grown and hand-processed. Many other textiles in West Africa are made out of this same cloth, distinguished by their unique dying techniques.
