Mossi Homespun Cotton Natural Textile - Burkina Faso

$398.00

This traditional 100% cotton cloth is a fully traditional textile, hand-woven in narrow bands by male weavers using the traditional double heddle dragstone loom. The cotton is locally grown then hand carded and hand spun into thread by women of the tribe. Once the bands are woven they are sewn together, side by side, by hand by women who also fringe the ends. This cloth was made in Burkina Faso by women of the Mossi tribe but this technique is the foundation of a large percentage of all the cotton cloth made all over Africa, especially West Africa. This is the cloth preferred for traditional African clothing. This cloth is not dyed; this is the raw cotton as it was grown and hand-processed. Many other textiles in West Africa are made out of this same cloth, distinguished by their unique dying techniques.

This cloth measures 68 x 49" (173 x 124.5 cm), not including the unfinished ends.
