This is a very old pair of candlesticks that were used in a religious shrine in a private household in Vietnam. It is the custom in every Vietnamese house, whether Buddhist or Catholic, to maintain a shrine. If the family is not very wealthy the shrine will be just a small table or a corner of their house. The wealthier they are, the more elaborate the shrine, up to a private temple or chapel in a separate room in their house, even a separate building on their property. This pair would have been incorporated in the shrine of one of the wealthier people.
